That's a Lance. I don't think the OP realizes there is quite a difference between a Polearm, Spear, Staff & a Lance.

they should make the paragons throw the spears at mid range and use it to stab/hack/[insert verb here] when the enemy gets in close range.

Funny thing, Spears in Runescape are actually like Paragon's spears (in that they are actual spears).

They just suck sooooo bad noone uses them.

Default Ummm... just wondering...

Don't mean to be anti-paragon, cos i think it looks awesome, but won't it cause issues with the aggro system? i.e forming an aggro bridge whereby the AI attacks the paragon instead of the tank then the spellcasters instead of the paragon, thus throwing a spanner in the works big-time for tanks..

Pls be nice and don't be know-alls, i was just wondering because I read a thread re:Aggro and it explained aggro bridges.

Any feedback would be appreciated!

*sigh*
I'm glad ANET didn't decide to give us two melee classes and actually put some thought behind what they were doing instead. I'd be pretty unhappy if they catered to this kind of thought.

Also, Dervish Scythe=mid-to-close range, can't have everything

So what, if Anet made like this, we can't really change the class just for.... that.

Look, about the animation, why the rangers haven't any Quivers anyway? Its not by the ass the arrows come from

Seriously, hear someone blaming just the look of an armor and the animation, the people start over and over again like Faction.

Ok....

Spear is a pointy sharp tip on a long shaft usually wood.

Theres at least 2 types of spears. Throwing and Handheld .

Anet gave us the lighter, smaller throwing spears.

Polearm weaponry like Halberds, Pikes, Partisans, Naginatas, etc still fall within the basic design of a spear.

Stop picking at it.

Just pretend Spear Mastery says "Javelin Mastery".

=.=

This is already a problem every tank faces. Necros, eles and rangers jumping in to attack too soon drag aggro away from the tank and bridge it back to the party. Any attack before aggro is set will cause the bridging effect. Its not like any party I have ever been in walks in formation by combat range like a real military group would.

You just gotta use the same 3 techniques as always to effectively tank:
1> Explain to everyone why they have to stay out of your aggro circle until they see all the bad guys attacking you.
2> since you know that never works, draw a line you dont want them to cross and pray they are looking at their compass
3> since you know that doesnt always work, keep your health LOWER than your party members so the monsters aggro on you anyway. Monsters primarily go after low health targets.

Note that hench parties (up until the flag was introduced -hurray) have been totally incapable of doing #1 or #2 so all you get is #3.

O_O Why would you use anything like that IRL? We're not in the medieval times anymore.

By the way I've noticed there has been more and more people posting on GWguru who can't speak english at all. Reading it makes me want to strangle myself, especially when its an arguement about spears not being used to poke and instead being used to throw. :[

Lessons he should have learned:

1. Don't take what you see from a game as the truth
2. Don't base facts off Diablo II

Anyway, Tip: Don't play paragons if you dont like them. You'll ruin their reputation by playing them - knowing 100% well that you're going to be "dissapointed"

Correction: One type of spear, many different uses. You can still throw a 'handheld' spear.

Spears in melee can also be useful in the context of blocks of pikemen as well...

However, you don't get many blocks of pikemen in GW - GW is more oriented towards small-unit tactics, and in the aforementioned small units, spears and pikes generally aren't the best weapon - their main advantage is reach, and when you don't have enough of them to field in ranks, it's just too easy to get past the spearpoint and under the spear's reach.

To the OP: If you want to play a Paragon in melee that much, take a Warrior (or Dervish, or Assassin) secondary. As I pointed out in another thread, the Paragon is blessed with armour that may actually give them a decent chance of surviving in melee if equipped with a melee weapon.

I would like to point out a few things that people seem to forget:
First of all, spears were not "pure thorowing weapons", spears made for hand to hand combat have been used for the better part of human history. Being a lone spear user has never been a good idea thought (think about it, i'm sure that i dont have to tell you why).

Before the lance was invented, spears were used for mounted troops (and jousting). If my memory serves, the lance, as we know it, was invented somewhere between 1200 and 1300 (thought dont quote me on that).

alot of spears were used for hand to hand combat and throwing
if people werent idiots and looked it up http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spears either on wiki or a real encylopedia they would know this.
spears are the ancestors of many divsions of weapons
spears are great melee weapons as well as thrown. as for who ever said that theyre horrible melee weapons other than being on a horse they've probably never seen a martial arts compitition. crazy how it looks especially the chinese spears http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qiang_%28spear%29 wouldnt wanna be on the wrong end of that in the hand of someone experienced.
keeping true to "spear man" they should be able to switch between melee and ranged
